What warehouse recycling sorting bins do you need?

Recycling is one of the easiest ways for a warehouse to become ‘eco friendly’, and can even reduce the cost of waste disposal for your company. This article explains which recycling sorting bins your warehouse needs, to simplify the process of going ‘green’.

USA Today claims that for most countries, the construction industry generates more than 90% of industrial waste. However, reducing your environmental impact can be as easy as implementing a few simple changes.

Solely by adding recycling bins to your warehouse floor, you can dramatically reduce your carbon footprint without affecting productivity or the bottom line.

Types of Waste:

There are 5 key categories of waste produced in a warehouse environment. Identifying which types of waste your warehouse produces is the first step to determining which warehouse waste segregation bins you may need to provide. The  key categories of waste are:

• Organic matter

• Glass/Metal/Plastic

• Paper/cardboard

• Hazardous and Toxic materials

• Residue (such as soiled and wet materials.)

For most warehouses, the common sources of these Inventory waste, Packaging waste, Transport waste and Motion waste, and the most common types of recyclable waste produced in a warehouse environment are paper, cardboard, glass, metal and plastic.

Providing the corresponding recycling sorting bins at frequent intervals, and in centralised locations with a high footfall, will allow easy access. This encourages workers to recycle habitually without it taking time out of their day or causing any distraction to their workflow.

How Many Recycling Sorting Bins Do You Need?

To work out how many bins you need in your workspace, we recommend auditing. Hiring a waste auditing company will allow you to learn more about how much you are outputting.

You may find that ways to reduce your waste become clear during this process, such as switching to reusable or returnable packaging, allowing you an opportunity to produce fewer materials, help the planet, and save money whilst doing it.  You may find that you end up with more material-based waste segregation vs general waste.

Alternatively, you can make a judgement call yourself. In an office environment, recycling is most effective when there are recycling sorting bins around 10-15 steps away from each employee.

Racksacks

To get started, we recommend a Racksack as the easiest recycling sorting bins to implement. Racksack’s are easily attachable to warehouse racking, trolleys or roll cages, which make strategic placement of recycling bins throughout large workplaces simple and cost-effective.

They are secure and quick to hang, so if you find that the recycling bins are not being used in a particular area of the warehouse, they can easily be moved to another location that sees the rate of recycling increase.

Alternative to Stationary Recycling Sorting Bins

Trolley Sack recycling sorting bin.

An effective alternative to stationary recycling sorting bins is rollcage sacks and trolley sacks. Easy to fix, easy to remove and empty, trollysacks allow you to organise waste packaging materials as you go. This removes the need for larger recycling stations or wheelie bins and ensures there is always a bin at arms reach for the workers that need it the most.

Labels

Clearly labelled recycling sorting bins can be a major factor in how successfully your company implements recycling. RAA, (Recycle Across America,) believe that standardised labelling for recycling bins should be a legal requirement.

They claim that “The first city to adopt the standardised labels on their residential carts experienced a 26% increase in the city’s residential recycling levels.” If people are confused about the bins, it takes time out of their workday and reduces the number of materials that are recycled correctly.

Efficiently recycled waste management can save time, maintain productivity and provide a long term sustainable solution to waste. And if this isn’t enough to get you started, the National Waste Associates suggest that ‘Typically, the cost of waste is between 4-5% of company turnover, but it can reach as high as 10%.

This means that warehouses can save hundreds of thousands of dollars by just focusing on the greatest waste reduction opportunities. It has never been easier to implement recycling sorting bins, and there are so many benefits!

Material-based waste segregation vs general waste

Have you done enough to measure your company’s commitment to material-based waste segregation vs general waste systems? We could have a great solution in the form of warehouse waste segregation bins.

The huge global push on corporate responsibility is bringing pressure to look more closely at what resources you throw away. That’s where material-based waste segregation vs general waste removal comes in.

Did you know that approximately 2.01 billion tonnes of solid waste still go to landfills, every year? That’s according to the World Bank. Alarmingly, places to bury our rubbish are running out.

However, taking steps towards better waste management is not just an eco-friendlier option. It also brings cost and time savings.

Why focus on material-based waste segregation vs general waste

It would be easy to think in this age of environmental enlightenment that we already do ‘our bit’ to protect the planet. Particularly with measures such as energy efficiency and recycling in the workplace.

However, data from The World Counts website would suggest there’s still a lot of work needed to protect our planet. This site provides a live calculation of environmental issues, and suggests that pulp and paper production is set to double by 2060, compared to 2010. Plus, paper still accounts for 26% of the waste added to landfills.

The UK Government is stepping up efforts to rectify situations like this, including setting a target of recycling 65% of municipal waste by 2035.

The big question we are posing in this article is whether there is more you can do to contribute to this issue, with a clearer understanding of material-based waste segregation vs general waste.

Barriers to better waste management

One of the things holding some companies back is the belief that segregating waste can be time-consuming and have cost implications.

In fact, as sustainability legislation and Government pressure ramps up, so do the solutions provided by innovative companies. Suppliers who make it intuitive to separate your waste materials are becoming a part of everyday working practices.

How to sort your waste into five categories

Collage of the different waste segregation categories that racksack cater for

The perfect example of a product that supports sustainable waste management is the racksack range. These warehouse waste segregation bins are extremely strong and easy to carry, plus fit easily in place and are handy for staff to use. The colours used to create this innovative product can be based on the universal categories for separating out waste materials.

The five universal categories are:

• Organic matter
• Glass/Metal/Plastic
• Paper/cardboard
• Hazardous and Toxic materials
• Residue (such as soiled and wet materials.)

Systems to make waste segregation easy

Let’s look more closely into racksacks’ speedy waste segregation system.

The clear version enables staff to swiftly remove paper and cardboard from their operational areas. This means the sack’s contents can be checked at a glance, to make sure nothing sharp or inappropriate has been added.

Full racksacks can be easily removed and emptied into paper waste recycling bins.

Depending on the type of business you run, you may prefer a green racksack for recyclable materials such as paper, as this is clearly an ‘eco’ waste bin.

You could source blue racksacks for general waste, or glass/metal/plastic materials. Keep in mind they are very strong, making them a safe way to store and remove these type of materials from your workplace.

Whatever colour coding and writing you use on your racksack order, you may also want to choose versions that hook onto trolleys or roll cages, as well as ones that fasten to racking, making your waste segregation practices company-wide.

More benefits of material-based waste segregation vs general waste

Photo of the racksack waste segregation bins

The leading brand of low-cost warehouse waste segregation bins can certainly help make your workplace more sustainable. Could it also bring efficiencies, and cost savings?

Some companies find this sort of set-up makes work areas cleaner and tidier, increasing safety standards and productivity.

There are occasions when paying closer attention to waste management enables companies to find better ways to do things – with fewer materials used. Or, they find creative ways to reuse discarded materials.

Case Study: New racksack® and visual aids deliver for leading UK packaging distributor

New racksack® and visual aids deliver for leading UK packaging distributor

Investment in a new Beaverswood racksack® system is improving the collection and segregation of waste at one of the UK’s leading packaging, office products and industrial equipment suppliers.

RAJA UK, part of Europe’s leading packaging supplier, the RAJA Group, supplies an extensive range of packaging products and systems to markets across the UK and Ireland from its new 260,000 sq. ft. central warehouse and distribution facility in Brogborough near Bedford.

There, investment in 50 new hardwearing polypropylene racksack’s is part of a range of Beaverswood products that are reaping benefits, with the company reporting improved segregation and management of waste materials as a team of 60 pickers process hundreds of orders on a daily basis.

Suspended from the end of shelving racks, racksack’s support picking operations, helping to keep the workspace tidy and free from potential slip or trip hazards. It also contributes to saving space, as operatives can handily dispose of paper, plastic, clips and other waste produce, which is then gathered and sent for offsite recycling.

Furthermore, it is saving RAJA valuable floor space, something that’s a great premium in a logistics and material handling space, thanks to its unique rack-hanging design.

RAJA, which is also a Beaverswood product reseller, estimates that its investment in the racksack, which sees waste segregated as orders are processed and distributed rather than collected at the end of each shift, is providing efficiencies that will contribute to long term cost savings.

The racksack system is one of several Beaverswood products used by RAJA that are proving advantageous. Picking errors have been reduced following investment in new aisle signage, rack labels and document holders to aid the swift processing of orders.

In the UK, employers must provide a safe workplace for people and use various strategies and signs to warn them of potential hazards. So, with safety and welfare paramount during the current pandemic, new safety floor markers have been installed in the Brogborough warehouse to ensure compliance with social distancing requirements and protect people in a busy industrial environment.

These product-based solutions have been effective, according to Chris Liddell, RAJA UK’s purchasing director, who added it was important to continue to invest to secure efficiencies as packaging distributors expand to meet Covid-driven ecommerce growth.

He said: “Our new distribution centre accommodates our plans and will support any requirements for future expansion. With this sizeable investment, it was important to have the right visual and organisational aids in place to maximise productivity. We opted for Beaverswood systems and have been delighted with the performance of the warehouse to date.

“Racksack helps us to meet our waste management responsibilities. The biggest benefit is that it provides us with an effective waste solution without taking up any floor space. This improves our housekeeping and boosts productivity at the same time. Together with other initiatives, it’s definitely helping us to be far more efficient and better recycle waste.

“Improvements on the back of new shelf signage and labelling systems have also contributed to making our workplace more productive for order picking and processing. Our pickers can see easier where they need to be in the warehouse and identify quickly where to they should be working.”

Chris Liddell added that Beaverswood supplies quality, good specification products, which are well supported and serviced.

Manufactured from hard wearing woven material to withstand the rigours of the warehouse environment, the racksack hangs off the ends of shelving and racking systems that are between 900mm to 1100mm deep. Sacks are available in multiple designs to allow for rapid waste segregation including mixed paper and card, plastic only, general waste, and more.

New Waste Management System Cleans Up At International Packaging Company

A new racksack® system from Beaverswood is improving the collection and segregation of waste at one of the UK and Ireland’s largest suppliers of industrial packaging and food service products.

Zeus Packaging (UK) Ltd, which is a leading specialist in distribution and manufacturing, supplying a diverse range of products to a wide range of markets both globally and in the UK, recently invested in 50 new hard-wearing racksack’s at its 97,000 sq. ft. warehouse and distribution centre in Biggleswade in Bedfordshire.

The move is already reaping rewards, with the company reporting significant improvements in the efficient segregation and management of waste materials as staff pick and fulfil delivery orders in a 24/7 operation.

Suspended from the end of each shelving line, labelled racksack’s support picking operations, helping to keep the workplace tidier and free from potential slip or trip hazards. It also contributes to saving valuable floor space, as pickers are able to handily dispose of cardboard, paper, plastic ties, clips and other waste, which is then emptied into onsite balers and skips before being sent for offsite recycling.

Zeus Packaging estimates that its investment in the new racksack system, which sees waste segregated as orders are processed and shipped, rather than laboriously gathered up and sifted at the end of each shift, will deliver significant savings in the long term.

It is also contributing to general all-round improvements in housekeeping performance at a busy operational site, while supporting a safer working environment for the sizeable Biggleswade workforce.

Brian Davey
, Regional Packaging Consultant at Zeus Packaging, who assisted in the implementation of the new system, said the company plans to incorporate further racksack systems at its other sites in West Bromwich and Norwich following the success of the first installation.

He said: “We have invested in the racksack in order to assist with our good housekeeping and to help with waste segregation, which makes us more efficient and helps us to push on with our recycling programme throughout the company. Although it’s early days, we recognise its benefits and it is now our intention to invest further with systems at all our other UK depots.”

Manufactured from hard wearing woven polypropylene to withstand the rigours of the warehouse environment, the racksack hangs neatly off the ends of shelving and racking systems that are between 900mm to 1100mm deep. Sacks are available various waste design prints to allow for clear and rapid waste segregation.

5 reasons why your workplace should use the racksack®

5 reasons why your workplace should use the racksack®

Have you heard of the racksack®? Taking workplaces by storm across Europe and the UK, it is the ‘must-have’ investment for the industrial workplace right now. Here are five reasons why so many businesses have bought into the racksack® system.

1. It’s the easiest way to store your waste in an industrial workplace

The racksack® has an intelligent design that allows you to hang it onto industrial racking and shelving easily using simple metal “S” hooks. Across Europe businesses are hanging their racksacks at the end of every aisle, which enables the workforce to ‘tidy as they go’ creating a cleaner and more organized workplace whilst combatting waste segregation at the same time.

2.  It’s space saving!

Because the racksack® hangs onto racking, it doesn’t take up valuable floor space. For many warehouses and distribution centres, space is a common nightmare – there is never enough of it! The great thing about the racksack® is that it doesn’t take up any. Warehouse Managers are freeing up floor space from giant wheelie bins, large recycle units, or ‘waste zones’ and instead using the racksack® which utilizes what would otherwise be dead space.

3. You can be tidy and recycle

Under the EU Waste Management Legislation, embodied in the EU Waste Framework Directive, businesses must take adequate measures to ensure that waste in the workplace is recycled. The racksack® comes in a wide range of designs for recycling – this includes a choice of colours, symbols and waste-related wording. In fact, you can even have your own customization on a racksack® including your own branding, to help you be as specific as your workplace needs to be when it comes to recycling waste.

4. It’s a big cost-saving!

With warehouse wheelie bins ranging from anywhere between £50 to £250+ the racksack® presents a giant cost-saving solution to traditional waste management methods. Retailing at a fraction of the price, you’re getting a much bigger ‘bang for your buck’!

5. racksack® goes beyond the aisle

The racksack® family expands beyond warehouse racking, with the range also including the racksack® rollcage for discarded waste from roll containers and the racksack® trolley for collecting waste on order picking trolleys. There is also the newly designed racksack® clear and racksack® rollcage clear. Think back-of-store, think mailroom, think storage units, think order picking and packing areas, think big industrial workplaces – the racksack® family provides a compliant, space-saving and efficient way for businesses to segregate waste.

Organising the Industrial Workplace for More Productive Workflow

Organising the Industrial Workplace for More Productive Workflow.

Workplace organisation is a visual and physical method of correctly organising the workplace. It ensures that only required material and equipment is present and that it is stored in a manner that aids the efficiency of the production facility or workplace.

Workplace and Stock Organisation

It goes without saying that labelling the workplace makes life a lot easier when searching for specific inventory or paperwork.

In the industrial workplace you can label shelving, racking, bins, boxes, trays, cupboards, folders… anything and everything!

Label holders and ticket holders are the most common and cost-effective method of labelling within the workplace.

Our label and ticket holders are available with a magnetic or self-adhesive backing which allows the holder to be fixed to either a magnetic receptive surface, like warehouse racking, or to a non-porous surface like wooden shelves in offices.

Labelling also improves stock control and logistics. Simply fix the labels underneath the relevant inventory and they will instantly be easier to locate.

Waste Organisation

Industrial workplaces get through tonnes of waste. Keeping your waste segregated not only helps the environment but it also keeps the workplace safer by preventing slips and trips on casually discarded waste.
If recycling is important to you then segregating waste into categories is an essential process of helping the environment. Having waste collection units designated for mixed recycling (or more specific waste products like plastics, cardboard, metal etc) is good practice for the workplace. Waste can often be a by-product-afterthought of the manufacturing, packaging and logistics process but within every industrial setting it is accumulated significantly every working day. Not only is abandoned waste an eyesore, but it can also cause genuine and painful slip and trip hazards for pedestrians. We have a solution for this: racksack®.

The racksack® is easily attached to end-of-aisle racking and shelving with metal ‘S’ hooks, saving valuable floor space.

Organise your industrial waste into categories. The racksack® was designed specifically to help facilities to segregate industrial waste. Designs include:

  • General Waste
  • Mixed Recycling
  • Mixed Paper & Card
  • Plastic Only
  • Shrink Wrap
  • Plastic Strapping
  • Glass
  • Wood & Timber
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminium
  • Metal
  • Electrical

In addition to the racksack® we also have racksack® trolley which is designed to fit onto standard order picking trolleys enabling the user to collect waste as they go, as well as the racksack® rollcage which, similar to the racksack® trolley, is designed to be attached to a rollcage container to easily collect waste on the go.

Tool Organisation

Shadow boards are a simple but effective way of organising important workplace items. Designed with the ‘5S’ system in mind (Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain) shadows boards have many benefits including: Improved productivity, easy traceability of tools, staff accountability, workspace utilisation and value for money.

Our Modulean Shadow Boards are a highly visual and useful tool (excuse the pun) to keep track of tools and equipment. Having a set location for specific tooling helps prevent them from getting lost and brings accountability to return the tools to its rightful place after use. Shadow boards are also great for creating a focal point, or ‘station’, for example a first aid station, meaning there is a designated location when looking for the first aid kit to deal with minor incidents or in an emergency situation, causing less panic and confusion.

The Modulean Shadow Boards come in various colours and accessories, and is now available in a ‘Lite’ version with an optional mobile stand.

Safety Organisation

Clearly indicated safety signs and instructions are an essential feature for workplace health and safety in many professional working environments. Identifying company safety policies, procedures, routes and locations is important for the safety of staff and visitors on any premises, especially industrial settings. With safety in mind, high visibility signage is a must.
Health and safety is a company responsibility for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare and occupational risks. A simple, highly visual signal or framed sign can help comply with all of these responsibilities.

We offer a wide range of floor signals, signs and document display products (pockets and frames) to help emphasise and clearly display important messaging and safety protocol information. Available in various colours for colour coding.

Floor signals, markers and Frames4floors™ offer highly visual and easy to understand instructions. Made with tough, durable PVC material these floor products are designed to be able to withstand everyday pedestrian and vehicle traffic, with an aggressive adhesive backing suitable for application onto clean, flat, sealed surfaces. Floor signals are a simple way of highlighting walkways, traffic flow, pallet positions and general marking on the floor. Floor markers and Frames4floors™ are ideal for permanently displaying important information.
