How barcode warehouse labels can keep you organised during busy periods

Most warehouses now depend on machine-readable labels, as well as inventory signage that’s easy for humans to use. Here’s a guide to barcode warehouse labels to streamline your operations.

Labels that can be read by handheld or robotic scanning equipment are now commonplace in warehouses and stockrooms.

The whole concept of barcodes has revolutionised product identification and storage since its invention in 1951. (Did you know the first version was based on Morse Code?) The concept of barcodes was not commercially widespread until the 1970s though, when supermarkets grabbed the opportunity to speed up payment processes and stock control.

Since then, innovation and speedy label printing services have created wider possibilities for barcodes. Including 2D barcode systems based on dots, rectangles, hexagons and other geometric patterns (sometimes referred to as matrix codes).

Whatever type of machine-readable code you use for your racking, pallets, boxes and individual products, it still relies on one fundamental principle. Barcode labels must be easy to place and scan, to optimise productivity. As well as to avoid mistakes, confusion and wasted time in warehouses and stock rooms.

This can be especially important at peak times when reliably readable labels enable you to keep pace with demand.

What do you need to know, to specify high-performance barcode warehouse labels for efficiency during busy periods?

The best warehouse label

Beaverswood warehouse barcode label

One of the most important things to keep in mind when sourcing barcode labels for warehouses, is that they don’t have to conform to a commonly adopted system. You can revise or update your inventory storage and location processes, at any time you want, using identification codes bespoke to your business.

All you need is a supplier of made-to-order machine-readable labels for warehouses, like Beaverswood.

Also, it’s important to source warehouse barcode labels that are clear and instantly scannable. This is the only way to keep your team fully operational and working efficiently at peak times when mistakes or delays cost money.

Lastly, the best barcode labels for warehouses must be high performance in terms of their durability.

Once you have established your inventory coding system and marked your shelves, pallets and other storage surfaces, you may want an adaptable labelling system you can change quickly. However, you also want labelling products that stand up to wear and tear, so you don’t have to replace them frequently.

Advantages of well-orchestrated barcoding

Being ‘picky’ about the performance of your warehouse labels can bring important benefits. Including that all-important clarity for picking and packing at optimal speeds.

Guaranteeing a fast recognition system in your warehouse manages your staff resources better, and boosts your profitability.

Also, don’t forget that barcodes are not simply a way of locating items quickly and faultlessly in warehouses. They can be adapted to help you with stock dating and rotation for example, or labour-tracking and stock replenishment. It’s incredible how much you can pack into a coding system for warehouses!

Reviewing your warehouse labelling

Beaverswood extra large ticket holders

Could this be the perfect time to create a new inventory labelling and identification system for your warehouse operations?

Care needs to go into planning a warehouse coding update, to make sure the switch over is seamless and complete.

Any machine-readable code you use for warehouse identification must be easy to integrate with the stock control software you use, of course. Also, if you’re applying barcodes to individual products, you need to be aware of any standardised industry formats that are applicable.

Beyond that, the recommended way to approach this is to create shortcodes that are bespoke to the size and complexity of your business, but which can be expanded and updated easily. Depending on your scanning technology, decide whether to use 1D or 2D barcode labels.

Then, map out the type and sizes of barcode labels you will need.

Your location specific labels from Beaverswood could be paper, vinyl, adhesive, magnetic or for clear pockets for example. There is also an option of buying multi-colour labels for fast visual referencing. Do you need barcode labels for uprights, split beams or to summarise your aisle contents?

There are also multiple options for barcoding shelving and racking, using a variety of materials and sizes.

The cost of stocking up on barcode labels may prove less than you imagine. This is a relatively inexpensive item, despite its high value in keeping your warehouse organised well under pressure.

You simply need to contact Beaverswood, to commission barcode warehouse labels that work brilliantly, in keeping your organisation on track.

Adhesive Backed Label Holders: A Simple but effective solution for your business

When you’re looking for a great way to simplify your business, excellent and clear labelling is key. Here, we examine how adhesive-backed label holders can be a brilliant solution for your business.

Where you can use label holders

Many places of business can benefit from using label holders. You may require them in order to clearly identify staff pigeonholes to ensure that everyone gets the correct internal and external mail. They can also be used to identify different files and folders in office environments, as well as different areas altogether. They are also great for organising reference material in libraries, schools and colleges. You could even utilise them in more industrial or construction based areas. However you use label holders, and wherever you are based, upgrading your usual ones to adhesive-backed label holders is a fantastic choice.

Improve visibility

Adhesive Ticket Holder on Racking and Adhesive Label Holder on Shelf

In a business or education environment, clarity can be the difference between success and failure, between time wasted and a productive workday. Using adhesive-backed label holders can increase visual clarity for everyone in your organisation. These label holders are instantly and highly visible to new and old staff members, meaning that the eye is drawn to them. With this being the case, it is that much easier for staff to locate the information they need in order to complete their tasks or notify the correct person.

A long term solution

There are plenty of options out there for holding your labels – and if you move your areas around a lot, or you need to switch things out often, then you may not worry so much about the longevity of the materials you use. However, if your environment is more static, then you need a more long term solution. Self-adhesive label holders work well with stable environments, as they will remain affixed to the surface you put them on for a long time. This ensures that fewer staff members will be confused by suddenly missing information – as can happen with other label holders that may fall down or slip into a position that makes them less highly visible.

A range of options

Ticket holder for racking and shelving to indicate location or product information

Are you concerned that you will not be able to get your hands on the perfect label holder for you? Beaverswood has got you covered. With a range of standard sizes available, you can get yours in everything from 15 x 80mm (in a pack of 100) to 30 x 1000mm (in a pack of 10), 50 x 80mm (in a pack of 100), and even more in between. If you don’t see the size you need on the website, then you will be pleased to know that custom sizes can be supplied to ensure that your business has everything it needs to run smoothly and efficiently.

Keep the costs down

We know how expensive it can be to run a business. Especially lately, times have been tight for many places, including schools and offices, and you may be looking for ways that you can save a little money. Fortunately, while you may consider the initial outgoing a higher expense, self-adhesive label holders are invaluable and can actually help you to keep your costs down. How?

By being sturdy and long-lasting enough that you will not need to replace either the holder or the label within it until you really need to. With less sturdy and less convenient label holders, you may find yourself spending more on replacements than you really need, not to mention the time lost. Self-adhesive label holders are really the best way forward for saving money and effort.

As you can see, there are so many excellent reasons to choose self-adhesive label holders. Whether you work in an office environment, a school, construction, or any other kind of job, these label holders can make it easier for you to go about your day with ease. Browse the selection on Beaverswood and see whether we have the ideal label holder for you – or get in touch for a customised size that will be created just for you. You can create a clearer, easier to navigate workplace – all with the help of self-adhesive label holders.

Bookshelf Labels Benefits: Keep Your Workplace Organised

Having a logical, well-labelled storage system in any building is common sense. We discuss bookshelf label benefits and how locational aids reinforce basic human needs and have other purposes.

Whether it’s a school, college, office space or busy warehouse environment, having a system to find items quickly – at a glance – saves time and avoids frustration.

Recently, there’s been a sharp upturn in TV programmes, books and social media posts about the benefits of getting organised and creating space. At home as well as at work. This has included discussion about simple techniques – including the Japanese Art of Decluttering – that enable people to decide whether to keep things and where to put items worth holding on to.

Beaverswood is ahead of this trend.

We have been selling traditional but highly effective organisational equipment for years. Versatile labelling systems for shelving, boxes, trays and racks that make tidying up easy.

Even in the digital age, physical labels are vital in public buildings, offices, educational facilities and factories, as well as warehouses and stock rooms. This article shows innovative uses of traditional ways to create bookshelf labels and other locational aids.

A tidy, well-organised workspace is good for you

First, why does finding a supplier of label products help you to make people happier and more productive in your workplace?

Studies have shown that having things laid out logically and clearly manages stress. There is even evidence to suggest that general health improves if you have a clean, tidy environment. One research project by Princeton University charted how having your vision assaulted by ‘task-irrelevant items’ made it difficult to focus. In other words, clutter is distracting.

It’s fundamental science really. Humans live and thrive on patterns and cycles, such as how we sleep to the way we read. Chaos and confusion cause anxiety and slow us down. Order and logic make us comfortable and more productive.

Self-adhesive numbers and letters

Letter stickers

Let’s start with the simplest system of all for workplace labelling the world over; alphanumerical characters as stickers. If you have bookshelves – or any kind of shelving, racks, storage boxes and draws – these create a highly visible coding system.

We sell sheets of numbers and letters in eight sizes and two colours. Each sheet contains a separate alphanumeric character – so you can mix and match according to the way you categorise things in your workplace.

These can label your bookshelves and any other places where items need to be returned to.

The smaller sizes are a handy way to mark up equipment, not just to show where it belongs, but also to whom it belongs.

Work trays and shelves can be individualised in schools, and equipment caddies can be numbered to coordinate with classroom tables.

The larger characters help you give doors a number or letter or mark out queuing lines in halls and foyers.

You can also use these adhesive alphanumeric character stickers to spell out important words for Health & Safety purposes. The word caution in yellow draws the eye really well!

Spelling out words, or giving items a number reference, to help staff locate things is as easy as ABC or 123, with these low-cost adhesive labels.

Self Adhesive Label Holders

Label Holder

What happens if you want interchangeable and quick to update labels for bookshelves, racks, trays and boxes? Beaverswood can frame the perfect solution!

Our self-adhesive label holders can affix to multiple surfaces firmly. You then simply switch the contents to continuously update the locational information. Buy label holder ticket inserts in bulk, and you can change your storeroom, classroom or office messaging daily if you wish.

Run a label holder on top of a noticeboard, to reinforce its contents, such as “First Aid information”, “Latest Staff News” or “Class 3’s Autumn Art project”.

The easy to install long-length label holders can run along the entire shelf, rack or wall.

In classrooms, words of the week or theme messages can be slotted in. It’s like an interchangeable informational display you don’t have to plugin! Simply write or print the text you need to communicate, slide it into the information holder, and then change it whenever you want.

Sign of the times

There are other cost-effective ways to use labelling systems to keep a workspace tidy and also to keep safety information and other messaging up to date.

Beaverswood can help you create a tidy workspace, and communicate loud and clear!

What are bookshelf labels?

Bookshelf labels provide versatile labelling systems for workplaces. They help keep workplaces organised by clearly identifying the products or inventory stored in that location.

The Benefits of Using Adhesive Numbers and Letters in Your Workplace

Adhesive letters and numbers as vinyl stickers are a logical and clear way to get organised. From wheelie bins to wagon bays, and from document files to warehouse racks, adhesive labels offer a range of benefits and solutions.

One of the most versatile, multipurpose products you can buy for your workplace is sets of self-adhesive alphanumeric characters. However, though we sell them in bulk for use in commercial settings, we also sell single sheets for anyone else who wants to make good use of letter and number labels.

Why Do Sheets of Stickers ‘Stick Around’?

Despite modern-day reliance on technology and digital devices, the simplest and best coding and categorising systems often rely on a humble sticker. Not least as our quality letter and number markers are incredibly easy to put down, then peel off to change what they say or to move them to a different location.

The human eye is well trained to use letter and number codes to make sense of our world; from house and road numbers to high-vis letters on stadium turnstiles and theatre seats. Having things explained using alphanumeric characters brings a sense of logic and familiarity, and it certainly makes location marking in warehouses as easy as ABC!

Creative Ways to Use Adhesive Letters in Workplaces

What Other Ways Do Our Customers Use Adhesive Letters and Numbers?

We’ve already mentioned these vinyl characters are a common way to label warehouse racking and storeroom areas. They’re also popular for signposting work zones in factories and engineering plants, or coding machinery for instant identification.

Robust and weather-proof letter and number markers can be used for laying out car parking areas, event spaces or lorry bays when the permanent painting is not appropriate.

Larger alphanumeric markers can signpost different entries or doors at your premises.

Many customers use our lettering to spell out important safety messages, the most obvious of which is CAUTION or to place NO ENTRY wording. It’s ideal to spell out one-way traffic systems and you can use vinyl lettering for THIS WAY, KEEP RIGHT AND KEEP YOUR DISTANCE for example.

Medium-sized vinyl labels with characters on can label up storage containers, shelving, and tool holders. Are you looking for the best way to mark up staff, sports or leisure lockers? These vinyl letters and numbers are perfect for that purpose.

Large character stickers are a versatile option for adding information to exhibition stands and other display boards that promote your company. Or use smaller versions to create headers for noticeboards, or to spell out locational details for inspection reports or essential equipment storage.

Another benefit of adhesive vinyl letter and number sets is to categorise and organise work folders and file drawers. Or, use letters to individualise work manuals and tools that belong to specific members of staff.

You can even use these as vinyl markers for wheelie bins, gates and fences at home, as we sell single sheets of adhesive numbers and letters.

Best Way to Buy Adhesive Letters and Numbers

permanent adhesive numbered labels

To keep up with the many purposes of self-adhesive numbers and letters, we sell versions with black lettering on a yellow or white background. This gives employers an opportunity to use the colour options in different ways.

The fact we sell each character on a separate sheet avoids having to buy the whole alphabet when all you wanted was certain letters and numbers significant to your layout or working systems.

Of course, different ways to use alphanumeric vinyl labels involve specifying diverse sizes of characters. Size matters when you need to slot your coding system on to small office items or emblazon it loud and proud on warehouse aisles!

This is why we supply sheets of individual letters and numbers in eight sizes, from 9.5 x 6mm sheets containing 168 easy peel characters, right up to large individual peel-off letters or numbers on a 230 x 140mm backing.

Quality But Low-Cost Adhesive Vinyl Letters and Numbers

Reliable quality is the universal feature of our self-adhesive letter and number labels. They are backed by a firm adhesive, but one that can be removed easily and cleanly from workplace surfaces. No sticky residue!

They won’t peel, wrinkle or shift in varying workplace environments either. Some cheap letter and number labels start to droop when exposed to the slightest heat or moisture.

To make workplace alphanumeric stickers even more cost-effective, ours are strong enough to be reusable too.

6 Benefits Of Label Pockets In Your Workplace

A workplace, especially one based in a warehouse or other industrial setting, needs to be well organised. You can easily create more order and ease of recognition within your workplace with label pockets. We explore the 6 benefits of our Magnetic Pouches and Self Adhesive Pouches and why you should be investing in getting your workplace organised

1.Flexibility Of Location

A workplace rarely remains the same for long. If your workplace requires a lot of different labels in different areas that often change, these magnetic labels are perfect. Because they are magnetic rather than adhesive, you can easily fix them to any metallic surface and move them around as and when you need.

You can simply use them in new locations time and again, saving money, time and work for your staff. It also helps to stop confusion, as there is no need for hold labels to be left in places where the information is no longer applicable. Self-adhesive label pockets are less flexible in location but still provide the same great performance.

2. Flexibility Of Information

Your workplace information could change monthly, weekly, or perhaps even more frequently. Whether you have accidentally mislabeled something, or you have frequently changing information, a label pocket with information you cannot change is more of a hindrance than a help.

These label pockets will not inconvenience you! For even better performance, you can change the pocket insert label. This is especially useful if the information about the area or item you are labelling changes frequently. You can simply slip out the insert label and replace it with a new label for a clear change.

3. A Range Of Colours

Labelled areas often contain sensitive or important information. Keeping the areas well defined is incredibly important, and especially useful during training as you can explain the areas to your staff in a simple way. It is so much easier to do this with clear labelling – and sometimes words just are not enough!

With these incredible label pockets, you can rely on a range of colours so that you can more straightforwardly coordinate labelled areas. This means less confusion, easier training, and a clear delineation between spaces. You can choose from Blue, Black, Green, Red, Yellow or Mixed to suit any established labelling practices, or create new ones.

4. A Range Of Sizes

Not all workplaces are the same, and not every area within a workplace requires the same amount of information when labelling. With our label pockets, you can get a whole range of sizes to suit all of your needs. Both our magnetic and our self-adhesive label pockets are available in 40 x 120mm, 60 x 100mm, 60 x 140mm and 30 x 100mm to meet a variety of labelling tasks. Whether you just need to write a name, require a little more information, or need the label to be readily visible at all times – we have got you covered.

5. Durable And Easy To Clean

The worst quality a label pocket could have would be if it was not easy to clean. Especially in the current climate, hygiene and cleanliness are more important than ever. You may work somewhere with tools, dust, and other kinds of dirt which can land on your label pocket.

These label pockets, both the magnetic and self-adhesive variety, are easily wipeable which makes them very straightforward to clean, even in messier working environments. This promotes workplace hygiene and means that the information inside the pocket is always clearly visible.

Another important thing to consider when choosing the correct label pocket for your workplace is thinking about durability. A label pocket that falls off the surface it is affixed to, or easily tears is not qualified for money.

6. High Quality

Every single label pocket you buy with us is made from a high-quality PVC material which makes them incredibly sturdy. We know that your label pockets might see a lot of wear and tear and daily use – you can be safe in the knowledge that these pockets have increased longevity. They can take a lot of use, whether you choose magnetic or self-adhesive.

Are you looking to make sure you have the perfect organisation in the new year?

All label holders are available in large packs of 100 to cover all of your company needs. With such incredible benefits, you can get your workplace organised in 2021 with these fantastic label pockets.

5 Warehouse Labelling Solutions To Improve Your System

Having a place for everything, and everything in its place, underpins productivity, waste management and safety. Here are five warehouse labelling solutions to enforce lean practices and consistent efficiency.

Designers and manufacturers of innovative labelling products have responded well to the needs of contemporary warehouse operations. Many logistics firms – and stock and dispatch departments in manufacturing companies – need easily readable locational markers suitable for technology. However, they often also still want systems that help human workers to track down items at a glance.

A combination of these locational methods keeps goods stored and moving effectively, and avoids production interruptions and H&S risks when confusion trips up the operational flow.

These labelling aims are why Beaverswood continues to add to its diverse range of signage products and systems. This includes making sure that our range includes both the latest in scannable labels and traditional, tried and trusted signage methods. Such as these five effective workplace labelling solutions.

1. Magnetic Numbers and Letters

Magnetic letters

As most warehouses rely on an intricate web of steel racking to store items, the best ‘coding’ system is a very long-established product; magnetic numbers and letter.

Modern innovation has yet to replace the simple logic of fixing locational aids on racking using magnetic signage. Especially as our robust and reliable alphanumeric characters can be re-arranged and refixed whenever you need to.

By offering different sizes and colour options for magnetic letters and numbers, we help customers to formulate their own coding and tracking systems which can improve their warehouse labelling solutions.

2. Ticket Pouches; self-adhesive and magnetic

Self-adhesive ticket pouches - simple warehouse labelling solutions

Another effective way to update and amend your product labelling and accounting systems in warehouses is to fix magnetic pouches to metal frames. Though we also sell a self-adhesive pouch range for semi-permanent fixing, and to create signage on non-steel surfaces too.

This is another example of how the most adaptable and visible warehouse signage is often based on time served practices. You can slot your data into our strong colour-coded ticket pouches to fix onto shelving, whether that’s scannable barcodes or visual references for your workforce.

We also sell a range of Magnetic Ticket Holders, ideal for identifying locations on shelving & pallet racking.

3. Pallet labels

Labelling items ‘on the move’ is also a vital function within warehouse operations. To make this process more intuitive, we offer adaptable and transferrable pallet markers. These can be quickly slotted on the corner upright of Euro pallets. As they are water, grease and oil resistant, they stay in place and are readable in all environment conditions. Warehouse operatives can use marker pens or adhesive labels to code the pallets according to your business practices and needs.

It makes pallet identification highly visible and easy to update.

4. Easy Wipe Racking Strips

MSRW Magnetic racking strip in use on pallet racking

Some locational signage in warehouses is adjusted several times a week or even each day. For this, we offer an instantly re-writable labelling system for racking. This is in the form of wipe-clean magnetic strips.

We supply this as heavy-duty magnetic tape rolls, that you can fix to steel surfaces instantly. Then, you write straight on to it; instructions, locational data and any other information you need to flag up. When changes are required, you use a damp cloth to wipe it clean and reuse the racking strip tape.

Simple, but it works brilliantly!

5. Location Code Labels

location code label for warehouse labelling solutions

More ‘high-tech’ warehouse labelling solutions involve adhesive racking labels printed with barcodes and other locational data.

Beaverswood offers a service custom printing labels for warehouses, including the option to commission whatever colour, size or even label material that best suits you.

These bespoke locational labels can include your barcodes and arrows to show uprights, for example. They are the ultimate solution to ensuring accuracy and visibility in your storage identification systems.

Warehouse labelling solutions range from traditional to tech-savvy, a sign of the times

Having spent so much time matching the signage needs of so many successful warehouse operations, it is no surprise that adaptable and adjustable labelling is one of our specialities.

However, every customer is different. Feel free to contact us for some individual help in sourcing the right products to keep your warehouse labels and signage instantly legible and efficient. Whether that’s fundamental magnetic markers for racking or made to order computer code labels for warehouses.

Organising the Industrial Workplace for More Productive Workflow

Organising the Industrial Workplace for More Productive Workflow.

Workplace organisation is a visual and physical method of correctly organising the workplace. It ensures that only required material and equipment is present and that it is stored in a manner that aids the efficiency of the production facility or workplace.

Workplace and Stock Organisation

It goes without saying that labelling the workplace makes life a lot easier when searching for specific inventory or paperwork.

In the industrial workplace you can label shelving, racking, bins, boxes, trays, cupboards, folders… anything and everything!

Label holders and ticket holders are the most common and cost-effective method of labelling within the workplace.

Our label and ticket holders are available with a magnetic or self-adhesive backing which allows the holder to be fixed to either a magnetic receptive surface, like warehouse racking, or to a non-porous surface like wooden shelves in offices.

Labelling also improves stock control and logistics. Simply fix the labels underneath the relevant inventory and they will instantly be easier to locate.

Waste Organisation

Industrial workplaces get through tonnes of waste. Keeping your waste segregated not only helps the environment but it also keeps the workplace safer by preventing slips and trips on casually discarded waste.
If recycling is important to you then segregating waste into categories is an essential process of helping the environment. Having waste collection units designated for mixed recycling (or more specific waste products like plastics, cardboard, metal etc) is good practice for the workplace. Waste can often be a by-product-afterthought of the manufacturing, packaging and logistics process but within every industrial setting it is accumulated significantly every working day. Not only is abandoned waste an eyesore, but it can also cause genuine and painful slip and trip hazards for pedestrians. We have a solution for this: racksack®.

The racksack® is easily attached to end-of-aisle racking and shelving with metal ‘S’ hooks, saving valuable floor space.

Organise your industrial waste into categories. The racksack® was designed specifically to help facilities to segregate industrial waste. Designs include:

  • General Waste
  • Mixed Recycling
  • Mixed Paper & Card
  • Plastic Only
  • Shrink Wrap
  • Plastic Strapping
  • Glass
  • Wood & Timber
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminium

Tool Organisation

Shadow boards are a simple but effective way of organising important workplace items. Designed with the ‘5S’ system in mind (Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain) shadows boards have many benefits including: Improved productivity, easy traceability of tools, staff accountability, workspace utilisation and value for money.

Our Modulean Shadow Boards are a highly visual and useful tool (excuse the pun) to keep track of tools and equipment. Having a set location for specific tooling helps prevent them from getting lost and brings accountability to return the tools to its rightful place after use. Shadow boards are also great for creating a focal point, or ‘station’, for example a first aid station, meaning there is a designated location when looking for the first aid kit to deal with minor incidents or in an emergency situation, causing less panic and confusion.

The Modulean Shadow Boards come in various colours and accessories, and is now available in a ‘Lite’ version with an optional mobile stand.

Safety Organisation

Clearly indicated safety signs and instructions are an essential feature for workplace health and safety in many professional working environments. Identifying company safety policies, procedures, routes and locations is important for the safety of staff and visitors on any premises, especially industrial settings. With safety in mind, high visibility signage is a must.

10 Simple Tips For A More Productive Warehouse

Warehouse managers are always looking for ways to work smarter, leaner and more efficiently.

Here are some simple tips to make life easier for everyone in the workplace.

Free up space for your waste and recycling

Waste is inevitable in the warehouse. The racksack® is the perfect solution to your warehouse-waste-woes. Easily hung on racking, the racksack® can be filled with up to 160L of waste. This frees up valuable warehouse space that a lot of businesses are currently having to dedicate to giant wheelie bins. With a wide selection of print designs to choose from you can be sure to find a solution for your largest waste culprits.

Highly visible signs and labels

Improving the flow of a warehouse as well as increasing health and safety awareness, signs and labels are important features of any warehouse. Important warnings and notices should be displayed clearly to meet HSE standards and regulations. Racking labels and identification are also important for improving warehouse logistics.

Optimise your storage space with racking and shelving

Sounds obvious right? But if you want your warehouse to be neat, storage efficient and safe, then racking and shelving is a must, and one of the first things you should look at streamlining. There are various types of racking: Cantilever racking, selective racking, push-back racking, drive-in racking, pallet flow racking and carton flow racking, among others. Do your research, and decide which racking and shelving is most effective for your warehouse space.

Dedicate specific areas to employees

This is the equivalent of making them feel like they have their own “office”! With dedicated areas, your warehouse also becomes more structured, and less chaotic. Come up with a floor plan, factoring in population and current warehouse capacity, and designate staff accordingly.

Housekeeping!

You should routinely clean your warehouse, don’t let it gradually descend into a dust and dirt haven. Keep cleaning products close by and easily available. Encourage pride in your workspace. Set up a routine where tools, machinery, merchandise and paperwork are all left in satisfactory condition by the end of each working day or week. Visual management boards are a great way of keeping the warehouse in tip-top shape.

Keep a suitable First Aid Kit nearby for any accidents

Injuries can be common in a warehouse environment, with heavy machinery and sharp tools being used each and every day. Having a visible and easily accessible First Aid Kit station on site can lead to a quick, potentially life-changing response. Be sure to have a trained first aider in your ranks, and make people aware of who and where that person can be found in case of an emergency.

Shift rotations and progression

Keeping your staff on their toes is imperative for achieving a happy and dynamic team. Some tasks can get tedious after a while. Where possible, make sure your staff are well trained in all aspects of warehouse duties and responsibilities – not only does this mean you can assign them to any task without dubiety, but it also covers duties when staff members are off sick or on annual leave. This will have a positive impact on productivity and will also improve individual progression which is great for team confidence.

Keep on top of inventory control

Whether it’s through computer system software or a simple pen-and-paper, checking system, your stock levels need to be observed and accurately recorded. Regular stock-taking (usually yearly, but can be weekly, monthly, quarterly) ensures quantities and the condition of items are precise. Visual stock marking is a great way of monitoring stock control.

Get rid of old stock!

Sometimes we can be hoarders, even in business. But there comes a time when those old products collecting dust on the top shelf are taking up valuable storage space that could be used for other items. If the stock hasn’t moved for a while, and you believe the value has decreased significantly… Get. Rid. However, if you think the stock is too good for a skip, perhaps think about selling your items in bulk, using auctions or online resale websites.

Communicate

This seems obvious, and yet is vitally important – Your warehouse is only as efficient as your team. Set up weekly/monthly/quarterly meetings for feedback and evaluations. Add a suggestion box for those who might not feel comfortable putting forward their ideas. Employees will often know the warehouse and its routines inside out – tapping into their brains for ideas can often be the best and quickest way to improve your organisation. If everyone is on the same page it makes the warehouse a much happier, more productive place to be!
